Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho was spotted at Serbia’s World Cup qualifier against Austria last Friday. He was reportedly scouting Eintracht Frankfurt midfielder Mijat Gacinovic, according to the Guardian, but also saw current United midfielder Nemanja Matic score in his nation’s 3-2 loss.
Reports suggest that Gacinovic has also been scouted by the likes of Bayern Munich and Arsenal, and the 22-year old seems to be hot property having scored twice in his first three appearances on the international stage. Gacinovic plays a more creative, attacking role than his international teammate Matic, and has played in all positions across the midfield. This flexibility and attacking intelligence is appealing for Mourinho who is currently without the injured Paul Pogba and Marouane Fellaini.
Despite Gacinovic’s explosive start on the international stage the Serbian midfielder has actually struggled for goals in Germany. Four goals in 50 appearances for Frankfurt isn’t particularly noteworthy, and he is also yet to register an assist in the Bundesliga. Despite this Mourinho clearly sees that there is clearly talent there. Should he make the move to Manchester, Gacinovic would be playing with players of higher quality than at Frankfurt, and this could elevate his game to the level that is required of Premier League title contenders.
