It is no secret that Spanish playmaker Juan Mata has had a troubled relationship with Jose Mourinho, stretching back as far as the pair’s time at Chelsea, and the midfielder was recently left out of Manchester United’s matchday squad in the defeat to the Blues.
According to the Express this is due to the fact that Spanish super club Real Madrid are interested in bringing Mata to the Bernabeu, perhaps even as early as January. The Spain international started his career in Madrid and a return to the Spanish capital would certainly be a great way to reinvigorate his career.
Mata has been somewhat of a utility player for Jose Mourinho, playing in a wide role rather than his preferred central position. Interestingly the midfielder is yet to play a full 90 minutes in the Premier League, and with a World Cup coming up in the summer Mata will need as much game time under his belt as possible.
His potential destination of Real Madrid certainly seems an appealing prospect, but Los Blancos are actually having a hugely disappointing season so far, by their own high standards at least. The reigning La Liga champions currently sit third in the table, eight points off rivals Barcelona after 11 games.
