The swirling rumours surrounding world class Manchester United goalkeeper David De Gea and a possible move to Spanish super club Real Madrid show no sign of subsiding this week, and the latest development involves a sensational swap deal between the two clubs.
According to the Guardian Jose Mourinho is willing to let the elite shot stopper make the switch to the Spanish capital, but only if French central defender Raphael Varane travels the other way to play in Manchester.
It is no secret that Manchester United have had some issues in defence this season, especially given the disastrous form of summer signing Victor Lindelof. The Sweden international has made just two appearances in the Premier League, despite a reported transfer fee of €35m.
While letting go of De Gea, who is arguably the best goalkeeper in world football right now, seems somewhat counterintuitive, reports suggest that United are already lining up AC Milan’s talented youngster Gianluigi Donnarumma as a potential replacement.
If that deal were to materialise, and the Premier League giants were to gain Varane as part of a De Gea swap agreement, then it is certainly possible to argue that United will have improved their squad overall.
